Which varnish should you use for MDF furniture? A complete guide

MDF requires a specific finishing system to seal its porous edges and achieve a uniform surface. We explain step-by-step which sealer and topcoat to use.

Which varnish should you use for MDF furniture? A complete guide

MDF (medium-density fibreboard) is one of the most widely used substrates in modern furniture making due to its smooth surface and accessible price. However, its porous edges and tendency to absorb product unevenly require a well-planned finishing system. ## Recommended ICLA system 1. Pigmented sealer (FPP 52/XX) — Apply two coats of pigmented sealer. The pigmented sealer fills the pores of the MDF and creates a uniform colour base, ideal for opaque finishes. Do not sand between sealer coats; only sand with 320 grit before the topcoat. 2. Pigmented topcoat — Apply the coloured topcoat in the desired shade. You have two options depending on the gloss level you are looking for: - OPP — opaque pigmented topcoat, available in super matt 10G, semi-matt 20G and satin 50G. Excellent hardness and whiteness for lacquered furniture. - LPP — high-gloss pigmented topcoat (100G), such as LPP 127/XX, for a high-gloss lacquer with great colour depth. ## For solid colour finishes (lacquered) If you are looking for a coloured lacquered piece of furniture, the pigmented sealer FPP 52/XX + OPP or LPP pigmented topcoat system is the ideal path. The OPP covers the full range from matt to satin, and the LPP provides maximum gloss. Both are pigmented with the ICLA CHROME system to achieve the exact colour, and for greater hardness and scratch resistance, they are applied as two-component polyurethanes.
