Paint vs. varnish for wood: differences and how to choose

To paint or to varnish your wood? We explain the difference between paint and varnish, the 3-in-1 system (stain, sealer, and topcoat), and the right path for colored lacquered furniture.

Paint vs. varnish for wood: differences and how to choose

One of the most frequent questions in carpentry and cabinetmaking is whether to paint or varnish wood. The short answer: it depends on the finish you want to achieve—and as a factory, at ICLA we produce systems for both paths. ## What is the difference between paint and varnish? - Clear varnish allows the natural grain of the wood to be seen and protects it with a clear film (matt, satin, or gloss). - Paint or colored lacquer completely covers the surface with a solid, uniform tone (lacquered finish). Both are manufactured with similar resins (polyurethane, nitrocellulose, water-based); the difference lies in the pigment content: transparent in varnish, high in paint. ## Path 1: clear varnish (see the grain) For solid wood where you want to preserve the natural character, the complete system is: 1. Stain — gives color and accentuates the grain without blotting the wood. 2. Isolating sealer — protects, isolates, and prepares the surface. 3. Sealer — seals the wood and creates the sandable base. 4. Topcoat — shine, hardness, and resistance in matt, satin, or gloss. This is the "3-in-1: stain, sealer, and topcoat" system that many look for: color, pore sealing, and protection in a single continuous process, with fewer steps and less product. ## Path 2: colored paint (opaque lacquer) For MDF or wood that you want in a solid color: 1. Pigmented sealer — fills the pore and creates a uniform color base (the key for MDF). 2. Pigmented topcoat — in the desired tone, from matt to gloss, colored with a tinting system like ICLA CHROME that replicates any RAL, NCS, or custom color with total consistency between batches. ## How to decide in 30 seconds? | Objective | Path | |---|---| | Visible natural grain | Clear varnish (stain + sealer + topcoat) | | Uniform solid color | Lacquering (pigmented sealer + pigmented topcoat) | | White or modern colored furniture | Lacquering with CHROME | | Rustic piece of precious wood | Varnish with stain | ## What about outdoors?
